1993: Athena Barnes, an actress/singer that's hoping to become famous, is throwing a party in the East Village. Her friend, Gregory Paget, is attending. Gregory has hopes of becoming a filmmaker in the future. Along with Gregory is Josh Adler and Joe Rivera, with whom he shares an apartment with. Josh's dad is a very wealthy real estate dealer and Joe is working on becoming a lawyer. One of Athena's friends from yoga class, Beth Greenway, also attends the paty. Beth is a teacher. Josh and Joe both go after Beth and try to win a date with her. Their plans are interrupted when a man with a gun decides he'd like to join the party, too. 2001: Joe and Beth are now married and live in a lavish apartment in New York. They also have a three year old son named Tyler. Joe has become a lawyer and is in the middle of a big case, defending a very powerful man on the charge of murder.
