Set in colonial Vietnam, a wealthy plantation owner, her adopted Vietnamese daughter, and a French naval captain form a cross-cultural romantic triangle. As political turmoil rises against European imperialism, their relationships are pulled in different directions and the mother must confront the emotionally difficult reality of raising the child of her daughter and ex-lover.
