In rural Mississippi in the 1940s, a local black man is found next to a dead white man, with a recently fired pistol, and is quickly jailed for murder. He insists on his innocence and asks a prominent lawyer for help, but the lawyer refuses—until a young boy who believes him reaches out before a mob can act.
