A plantation owner pushes his son to marry and secure an heir, but his son turns to buying people to satisfy his own desires and to advance the family’s interests. He also acquires a Mandingo slave to breed and train for prize-fighting, setting off escalating cruelty, jealousy, and conflict on the plantation.
