A doctor from Moscow arrives at a provincial mental institution and becomes fascinated by a patient who insists he took part in a notorious historical killing. As their conversations deepen, the patient’s intense ideas and persuasive presence begin to blur the doctor’s sense of reality, drawing him into questions of guilt, duty, and how the past can echo into the present.
