After a university setback, a music scholar impulsively visits her sister’s rural school in Appalachia. There, she encounters a remarkable trove of inherited Scots-Irish ballads and sets out into the mountains to collect and preserve the songs, finding herself increasingly pulled in by the people and their traditions.
