A newly qualified Scottish doctor takes his first job in a Welsh mining town, where many miners have a persistent cough and his efforts to prove the cause are blocked. He heads to London, where his practice struggles, until a friend shows him how to profit from wealthy patients—forcing him to confront what it really means to be a doctor.
