In fascist Italy, a reserved young man joins the secret police and is sent to Paris to arrange the assassination of a former teacher who has become a political dissident. Accompanied by his new bride, he reconnects with the target and finds his assignment complicated by personal doubts, attraction, and his desire to appear normal.
