During World War II, a German unit occupies an ancient mountain fortress in Romania and guards a remote pass. Two soldiers accidentally awaken a mysterious entity that kills or corrupts those who come under its influence, pulling in a ruthless commander, a Jewish scholar, and a strange traveller.
