In Nazi-occupied Slovakia during World War II, a timid carpenter is appointed to oversee a button shop owned by an elderly Jewish widow. With a paycheck and new standing at stake, his growing friendship with her is tested as authorities tighten their grip and order all Jews in town to be rounded up.
