In a small Protestant village in northern Germany, a schoolteacher looks back on the year before World War I, when a string of unsettling accidents and acts of cruelty disrupt daily life. As suspicion spreads and authority figures tighten their grip, the community’s secrets and resentments begin to surface without easy explanations.
