In the aftermath of the Civil War, one of the last bills signed by President Lincoln backs the Union Pacific Railroad pushing across the wilderness toward California. When a financial schemer tries to profit by obstructing the effort, a chief troubleshooter and his rivalries—including a personal triangle—are pulled into escalating danger.
