After the Civil War, a wagon master guides freed slaves heading west for new lives, only to find cheap-labor agents and bounty hunters determined to drive them back. When he crosses paths with a flashy preacher who has his own motives, the two form an unlikely partnership to protect the travelers and keep their hopes alive.
