In a world where Paul Schrader hasn’t written Taxi Driver or First Reformed, there’s probably more here to chew on. This series of films involves men in crisis journaling, circling a drain of mania until they see no choice but to right the wrongs of the world. This particular story is set in the world of cards, and it does a pretty good job explaining card counting in under a minute. A central well executed question of the story asks what redemption looks like for unforgivable acts? But a key relation between Oscar Isaac and Tiffany Haddish falls pretty flat. The Card Counter would be a great movie if it were more novel. 🃏🃏🃏 / 🃏🃏🃏🃏🃏.
