After the death of her abusive father, lonely librarian Martha gets pulled into a disturbing, controlling relationship with a monstrous husband. As his behavior turns increasingly dangerous, she begins to suspect he may be trying to harm her, while her attempts to cope leave her trapped in a sad cycle.
